The Powerhouse – Center of Strength

A strong core as the center of every movement.

The abdomen, pelvic floor, and deep back muscles together form a central unit that supports stability, posture, and movement. But what exactly is meant by “powerhouse”—and why does it play such an important role?

What is the Powerhouse?

Put simply, the term “powerhouse” refers to the center of our body—the area that stabilizes our core and provides controlled support for
movements.

These include, in particular:

  • the deep abdominal muscles, particularly the transversus abdominis muscle,
  • the pelvic floor,
  • the deep back extensors, particularly the multifidi muscles,
  • and, functionally speaking, the diaphragm as an important component of the core pressure system.

The "powerhouse" is therefore not simply synonymous with "strong abdominal muscles." Rather, it refers to the interaction of various muscles that stabilize the core and support movements originating from the center of the body.

Not all “bellies” are the same.

When we talk about activating the powerhouse, the term “abdomen” does not primarily refer to the visible straight abdominal muscle (musculus rectus abdominis).

At the center is the transversus abdominis muscle, the deepest of the lateral abdominal muscles. It runs almost horizontally around the trunk and plays a major role in actively stabilizing the trunk.

"Lower back" is more than just the lower back.

The term “lower back” can also be misleading. It does not refer only to the muscles immediately surrounding the lumbar spine.

The deep back muscles, particularly the multifidi, play an important role. They are located close to the spine at each segment and help stabilize it and enable controlled movement.

The "powerhouse" is therefore neither a single muscle nor a clearly defined anatomical region. Rather, it is a functional interaction of several structures.

Why is the Powerhouse crucial for stability?

Our bodies must constantly balance two demands: stability and flexibility.

When we walk, lift something, turn around, or maintain our balance, our core must be stable enough to allow us to use our arms and legs efficiently. This does not mean tensing the core as much as possible or holding that tension for a long time.

What matters most is targeted activation tailored to the situation.

A well-functioning powerhouse can help,

  • to stabilize the spine during movement,
  • To transfer forces between the upper and lower body,
  • to perform movements in a more controlled and efficient manner,
  • to help maintain balance,
  • and to reduce unnecessary evasive maneuvers.

So stability doesn't mean becoming "stiff." A functional core provides stability while maintaining mobility.

How do you activate the Powerhouse?

Before we begin with specific exercises, the first step is to become aware of the individual components of the powerhouse and to activate them in a targeted manner. The focus here is not on generating as much strength as possible, but rather on a subtle and coordinated interaction.

1. Engage Your Pelvic Floor

Imagine you want to gently lift your pelvic floor inward and upward. This contraction should be controlled, without holding your breath or unnecessarily tensing your buttocks and abdomen. The subsequent relaxation is also important: A functional pelvic floor can not only contract but also release.

2. Engage the deep abdominal muscles

Next, the deep abdominal muscles—particularly the transversus abdominis muscle—can be incorporated into the exercise.

As you exhale, imagine gently pulling your lower abdomen inward. Keep the movement small and controlled. The goal isn’t to pull your abdomen in as much as possible, but to feel a slight tension in your deep abdominal muscles. This allows you to engage your pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles together. Keep your breathing calm and free.

Once the basic activation is noticeable, it can be integrated into movements. In the process, the body learns to stabilize the core while the arms and legs move.

Quality over strength.

A good activation is characterized by the fact that it

  • checked,
  • in measured doses,
  • coordinated with breathing
  • and is adapted to the respective movement.

People who pull their stomachs in as much as possible during every exercise, hold their breath, or tense up their entire body do not necessarily develop better core stability.

Rather, the goal is for the body to learn to build up the right amount of tension at the right time.

The Powerhouse as a functional unit.

The "powerhouse" is best understood as a team effort . The deep abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, and deep back muscles do not work in isolation from one another. Together, they help stabilize the core and control movement.

Breathing also plays an important role here: the diaphragm, the abdominal muscles, the pelvic floor, and the deep back muscles are functionally interconnected.

A strong core, therefore, does not mean having as much strength in your abdomen as possible. It means being aware of your core, stabilizing it as needed, and remaining flexible at the same time.

It is precisely this combination of stability, mobility, and coordination that makes the Powerhouse a key element for efficient and controlled movement.
